On the afternoon of April 6, during the ceremony of Xiamen University, we respectfully declared the Honorary Professorship for "winner of the Nobel Prize in physics” Konstantin Novoselov. Professor Yunbao Jiang, Dean of the College of chemistry and Chemical Engineering performed the ceremony at the chemistry hall. Prof. Yunbao Jiang introduced the professor Konstantin Novoselov to the teachers and the students. He expressed the gratitude to Professor Novoselov who has given the strong support and patient guidance in personnel training, scientific research and discipline construction for Xiamen University since 2014. The president of Xiamen University, Zhu Chongshi issued the letter of appointment, and wore the school badge for professor Novoselov, also issued the monument of Nanqiang Lecture. Novoselov, being an honorary professor of Xiamen University, said that Xiamen University has an outstanding strength in research. Later on, he will further help in student exchange (co-culture) and the scientific research cooperation to promote cooperation between Xiamen University and the University of Manchester, England.

After the ceremony, professor Novoselov gave a wonderful lecture on the title of "Materials in the Flatland: the story of SP2 carbon". At first, he introduced the history of the development of SP2 carbon materials in detail, the discovery process of graphene, excellent optical, electrical and thermal properties of graphene and the application in the field of energy, film, composite materials, biomedical, sensors and electronic devices, etc. the broad application prospect. The excellent properties of ultra-thin graphene has stimulated the exploration of other new two-dimensional materials, he also shared his latest progress in the field.

Curriculum Vitae:
Professor Konstantin (‘Kostya’ Novoselov) was born in Russia in August 1974. He has both British and Russian citizenship. He is best known for isolating graphene at The University of Manchester in 2004, and is an expert in condensed matter physics, mesoscopic physics and nanotechnology. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2010 for his achievements with graphene. Kostantin holds positions of Honorary Professor of Physics at The University of Manchester and Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS). He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, and undertook his PhD studies at the University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands before moving to The University of Manchester in with his doctoral advisor Andre Geim in 2001. He was awarded with numerous prizes, including Nicholas Kurti Prize (2007), International Union of Pure and Applied Science Prize (2008), MIT Technology Review young innovator (2008), Europhysics Prize (2008), Bragg Lecture Prize from the Union of Crystallography (2011) and the Kohn Award Lecture (2012). He was knighted in the 2012 New Year Honours.
His relationship with Xiamen university:
Until now, the highest single article citation of Prof. Novoselov has reached around #21218 (2004, Science), achieving the highest recording both in graphene research field and in physics. During the period 2013-2016, Prof. Novoselov published 5 works in Science, 2 works in Nature and 19 works in Nature Family. He keeps bursting out research vitality and leading the forefront in the related field.
Prof. Novoselov was invited by the Collaborative Innovation Center of Chemistry for Energy Materials and has joined as iChEM Honorary Distinguished Professor in 2014. He visited iChEM seven times in 2014-2016 for a span of about four months for substantial collaborative research in the field of graphene and two dimensional (2D) materials at iChEM. On October 23, 2015, President Xi Jinping visited the National Graphene Institute of Manchester University. Professor Novoselov introduced graphene research situation for President Xi when he visited the clean graphene underground graphene laboratory. On March 3rd, a paper was published in Nature Nanotechnology by Prof. Novoselov with professors in Xiamen University. Meanwhile, Prof. Novoselov strongly supports our college and Xiamen University in many aspects including cultivating talents, scientific research and discipline construction etc.
